GIS is everywhere! Most companies have to handle data with a geographical dimension and have come to recognize that using geographical information systems enables them to better meet the company’s objectives. The use of GIS enables managers to demonstrate previously unrecognized (spatial) patterns in their data, thus GIS has become a tool to support management decisions.
The use of GIS can therefore be found in many government agencies and businesses. Many government agencies use GIS to help in planning and organizing their geographic data. Thus GIS is used to keep track of the properties, public works, roads, and more within their jurisdiction. Police, Fire and other Emergency Services have begun to use GIS to help in their daily operations for helping track crime, find the shortest route to emergencies and more.
Within the business community a wide range of business in the Caribbean have seen the importance of utilizing geographical information systems and so GIS is used by Communication technology companies in planning their utility expansions, Real estate agents and bankers are using GIS to track properties, property values, and tax information. Companies involved in distribution businesses benefit from the use of GIS as it allows them to easily see where existing and potential markets are and plot their distribution routes.
